ACTION FOR DAMAGES
SEQUEL TO AN ACCIDENT. IP** Dkitbd Pbess Association.) CHRISTCHUUCH, Juno 22. The Supreme Court is occupied in hearing a claim for damages. Before Mr Justice Demriiston and a special jury of 12, Alexander Robert WalKs, timber merchant, of Dunedin, claimcd- from Joseph Mandel, proprietor of the United Service Hotel, Christchurch, £2200 as damages for a lift accident, -which occurred at tho Ihotel on January 7. Tho statement of claim set out that plaintiff -was a boarder at tho hotel. He requested tho man in charge of the lift to convey him to his room, on the third floor. Tho man- opened tho lift gate, and plaintiff stepped in, but tho was not there. Plaintiff sustained savere injuries as a consequence. For the defence Mr Raymond said he intended to call medical evidence to show that there- was no reason to suppose that tho plaintiff would suffer any permanent injury. Dr Sandston. who had raodo thorough examinations of the plaintiff, said the plaintiff had made progress sinco the time ho first saw him. He did not consider that the nerve centre was injured, nor .did ho consider that the plaintiff's longevity had been materially impaired-. The case will bo resumed to-morrow.
