Morris, 23 Whitby street, Mornington, has received oable advice that her sccond son, Richard Michael Morris, is dangerously ill in Boulogne Hospital, as the result of a gunshot -wound in tho right thigh. Privato Morris left Dunedin with tho Third Battalion, Rifle Brigade, and was afterwards transferred to the Machine Gun Corps. Ho onlisted with tho Main Body, and was in tho thick of tho fighting at Gallipoli and also in Flanders, LIEUTENANT COTTER. Lieut. Henry Frahois Cottor, whoso death from, wounds is reported, was educated at Hawca, tho Timaru High School, and Victoria College, Wellington. For over two yoars ho hold a commision in tho sth Wellington Regiment. Ho was in the employ of tho Customs Department at Westport and Wellington, leaving tho latter port as O.C. the 25th N.Z. Field Artillory on January 2. Ho was prominent in athletics, and had represented th'o North Island in tho football field, wliilo ho was an amateur boxer of moro than avorago merit. Ho is tho second member of his family to fall in aotion, an elder brother (Sergeant John Cotter) having fallen at Hamelfontein (South Africa) in 1901. LIEUTENANT THOMPSON. Lieutenant William Phillipe Thompson, already reported as wounded on Juno 7, the day of tho capture of Messines, is now reported killed in action that day. Ho was a gifted and zealous officer, known to many in Otago. Tho son of Mr Thomas J. Thompson, who movo than onoo 'has been mayor of Hastings, ho received his primary education at tho Havelock North School, and passed from it with a scholarship to the.. Napier Boys' High School. Ho became apprenticed to a firm of surveyors, and after finishing his course he oame to Knox Collogo and Otago University for higher study. Ho was. wo understand, a member of tho First Fifteen of tho University Football Club. Ho was .prominent also in Bible class circles in Hawke's Bay, his family being among tho foremost members of tho Presbyterian Church there. LANCE-SERGEANT FOGARTY. Lance-sergeant R. Fogarty, who has been wounded, left Now Zealand with tho Ist Battalion of tho Now Zealand Riflo Brigade. He waa well known in athletio circles, as a footballer, cricketer, and amateur boxer. For two seasons previous to leaving for the front ho was captain of the Union first fifteen. Ho also played for Otago in representative football. Lance-sergeant Fogarty was a member of the Now Zealand soldiers' football team wliicht defeated tho French team at Paris on Easter Saturday. He was also a member of tho Grange and Christian Brothers cricket teams. Another brother (Herbert) was killed in action on the Somme in November CORPORAL WEER. Mrs C. Weir, Pnkehiki, Otago Peninsula, has received information that her son, Corporal Gerald Weir, has lost his left hand as a result of recent wounds. Ho enlisted with the Main Body at Wellington, served for months in Samoa, and left with tho Twelfth Reinforcements. Before enlisting Corporal Weir was a civil servant at Wellington. Ho received his education at the Sandymount and Otago Boys! High Schools. CORPORAL ISLIP. Corporal Ernest Ellis Islip, who was killed in action somewhere in Franco, was a native of Milton, but spent the greater | part of his boyhood in Otago Central. Ho was at ono time a pupil at tho Forbury School, and was also at the George Street School. After leaving school ho entered tho local Telegraph Office, but later joined the railway ecrvicc, from which he enlisted with tho Rifle Brigade somo two years ago. He saw servcie in Egypt, Mesopotamia, and France. Last January Corporal Islip was awarded tho Military Medal for gallantry in action. | PRIVATE RICE. Privato Wm. Thomas Rico, reported killed while in action in Franco on June 1, was the eldest son of Mrs" E. J. and tho late Wm. Rice. Royal crescent, Musselburgh. Ho was born in Dunedin, and was in his thirty-first year. He was educated at the j Normal School, and after attaining manhood was a very enthusiastic cricketer. Ho I played for the Grange Club for some time, and then for the St. Kilda Club. He was also a member of tho Alhambra_ Football Club for many years. . Private Rice was a soapmaker by trade, and was employed at M'Leod Bros.', works up to the time ho enlisted in the infantry with the 13th Reinforcements. He left New Zealand at tho end of May, 1916 Ho went to France at tho end of September, and had been in tho thick of tho fighting up to tho time of his death. Ho was much respected by all with whom he came in contact. His younger brother. James Rice, left New Zealand with the 16th Reinforcements, and is now "somewhere in France." CORPORAL JACK AND PRIVATE THOMSON. Flags were flown at half-mast on Thursday in Port Chalmers, as a mark of respect to tho late T. H. Jack and R. L Thomson, who wero killed while serving at tho front. Corporal Jack was the youngest son of Mr Alex. Jack, of Sawyer's Bay. He enlisted in tho- Fourth Reinforcements, saw service in Gallipoli, and was then transferred to the machine gun section in Franco. Advice on Saturday stated that ho was quite well, but a telegram received on Wednesday afternoon advised that he had died from wounds. Privato Thomson was the' second son of Mr Samuel Thomson, of Port Chalmers, and was very popular with local residents. Previous to his enlistment he was. employed as a blacksmith in the Maori Ironworks. GUNNER, SHEPHERD. Gunner Robert B. Shepherd (reported killed in action on June 6) was familiarly known as "Bob" Shepherd in tho realm of athletics in Dunedin. Of splendid physique, he was for years a source of strength in the Northern Association Football Club's back division, and represented Otago on many occasions. Ho was also a member of the Albion Cricket dub. ■ At the weekly practice last evening of King Street Congregational choir, of which the deceased was an active member, a resolution of condolence with the parents (Mr and Mrs P. N. Shepherd, formerly of Cumberland street, but now of Invercargill) and relatives was carried. Two brothers of the late soldier —James and Nimmo Shepherd— are with tho Expeditionary Force. Tho deceased left with tho Auckland Mounteds, but in Egypt -was transferred to tho artillery. , PRIVATE MARRY ATT. Private Wilford Marryatt, who,is reported as "grounded, is the eldest son of Mrs Marryatt, Ferguson street, Musselburgh, and is 25 years of age. Ho was employed by the Flourmillers' Association for somo time, but ho went to tho North Island last year. He loft New Zealand with the Seventeenth Reinforcements , RIFLEMAN. GUNION. iufleman Alan Douglas Gunion, who 'was severely wounded in the head and arm in tho battle at Messines, is the youngest son of tho late Robert and Emily Gunion. He was bom at Galloway Station, Otago Central, and commenced his education at the local schools, finishing at the Otago Boys' High School. Ho -was a keen sportsman and brilliant footballer, and was captain of tho Otago Boys' High School Football Club. Ho was employed, in tho Bank of New Zealand at Alexandra, Queenstown, and other places, and rose to tho position of teller. He was stationed at Taihape when he enlisted in tho Seventeenth Reinforcements, and was mado corporal. Ho left New Zealand in September,, 1916. He went to France as rifleman in the N.Z; Riflo Brigade, and was wounded on Juno 7.- Ho is now in No. 1 N.Z. Hospital at Amiens, and is reported to bo dincerously ill. Ho is 27 years of age. PRIVATE WILSON. Private David Mitchell Wilson (killed on Juno 8) was tho eldest son of Mr and Mrs David H. Wilson. He was born at Romahapa, and was educated at tho Windsor School, near Oamaru. He was in tho railway service as a cleaner and acting-fireman at Oamaru when he enlisted with tho Eleventh Reinforoements, and loft "the dominion in April, 1916. He was wounded in tho loft arm and left leg during tho Somme fighting last September, and admitted to tho hospital at Etaples, where he was an inmate for six weeks, and then rejoined his regiment. Privato Wilson recently celebrated his twenty-first birthday in the trenches. PRIVATE MORRIN. The newsof the death on June 8, from wounds received in France, of Private James Morrin, eldest son of Mr and Mrs James Morrin, of ■Roxburgh East, cast quito a gloom- over the whole district, and much sympathy is expressed for his parents. He was a member of the Thirteenth Reinforcements (machine gun section), and was just entering his twenty-fifth year. After leaving school he was apprenticed to tho baking trade, and_ was engagod at that calling when ho enlisted. He was of a quiet, affable disposition, the very essence of good nature, and was heid in the highest esteem by everyone. Ho enlisted some 15 months ago. Immediately on tho news being made known flags on tho school—his father being chairman of the School Committee—and on-the hall were flown at-half-mast.

Bowie, of tho Fifteenth Reinforcements, was wounded on tho 7th. mat, while lighting in France. PRIVATE BEATON. Private John Beaton, whoso death occlUTod on Juno 9 from wounds received while in action in .France, was tho fourth soil of Mrs Catherine and tho lato Archibald Beaton, No. 408 Cumberland street, JJuriedin. Tho deceased was born at Waianakarua (near Hampden). After loav3ng school ho followed farming pursuits for three or four years, and when the family removed to -Dunedin he "was employed by his father a 6 a butcher at Caversham. In later years he followed the occupation of a shearer. Ho returned to Dunedin from Australia about two years ago, volunteered I twice, but was rejected on both occasions, then went into tho Dunedin Hospital , u , , an operation to his legs, to onablo him to join tho forces. At the next test he failed in eyesight, but was finally passed as physically fit. He went into camp with tho 12th Reinforcements, but was later on drafted into tho 11th Reinforcements. and left New Zealand on April 1, 1916. Ho went straight to France, and tonght through tho thick of tho Somme battles, and came through without being wonnded. Tho deceased was well known as a competitor at tho Pipers and Dancers' Association competitions, and while at Feathorston camp was also a piper in the Masterton Pipe Band. Ho was well spoken ot by all with whom ho came in contact. A younger brother, Trooner Sinclair Allen Beaton, .went away with the 6th Reinforcenionts, fought through the Gallipoli campaign, and was ono of tho last to leave the peninsula at the evacuation. Ho was promoted to gunner on arrival in France. J-ho parents were advised recently that lrooper Beaton had been burned about the feet on May 29 by the fire from a machino gun while fighting in Franco. He is now in tho Walton-on-Tham.es Hosnital, Enga' j , Another son, Archibald Beaton, ottered his services when war broke out and also offered to provide himself with a horso and all necessary equipment. He failed to pass the medical test, however. He was transferred to the North Island by tho Railway Department, and died in the Hamilton Hospital on October 8, 1916. under an operation. In addition to' tho loss of her two sons, Mns Beaton lost her husband a few weeks ago.
