THE WAITOTARA.

CREW SAJFK PICKED UP BY FRENCH STEAMER. HOPES FOR THE WAITOTARA Three relief steamers are searching for the crew of tho Waitotara, which was abandoned on Monday morning about 200 miles ' trom land. The crow, who number 40 men, would doubtless provision the boats well before quitting the eteamer. It is thought that the firo originated in the Waitotara s cargo of copra. The cargo included oils and paper for Australia. Last night the Union Steam Ship Company was advised by cable by tho British Consul at Noumea that he had received advice ,by cable from the captaip of tho W aitotara that all the members of the crew had been picked up bv a French stoamer. The captain of the Waitotara re- . ports that tho steamer was burning fore and aft when she v/as abandoned, and would probably bum for four or five days, but ho hopes that Bhe may not prove a total loss. She will be towed to Noumea if she is considered worth salving.
