A matter of some importance to farmers was stressed by Mr C. A. Wilkinson, M.P., in an address to farmers on tho subject of taxation (says tho Hawera correspondent of tho Dominion). He pointed out that a farmer could not claim exemption for wages for his children unless the money had been actually paid over to thorn. Ho agreed that in many instances it was a great hardship that an allowance could not. be made for the work dono by farmers' wives, or that some recognition could not ho shown for such work. He thought flirt tho existing law would havo to be altered to . make provision in that connection, but tho difficulty was that if such a provision wore made it would havo to apply to other people as well as farmers, and they -would then havo full claim for exemption mado' by some business people, whoso v i"ca would perhaps work an hour a day in tho business. He questioned whether if a provision were mado for allowances on aol count of wives' assistance, much would bo gained. Tho Finance Minister had mado up his mind that a certain sum must bo ' produced by taxation, so that if exempt tions were mado in ono direction tho 'deficiency had to be nvwle up in another.
