GENERAL NEWS

Tbo monthly meeting of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children was held yesterday in the Town Hall. The" Rev. Canon Curzon-Siggers (president) occupied tho chair. Tho treasurer's report was tabled, and all accounts due were passed for payment It was decided that Miss Hilda Tyrrell be appointed collector for the society for the coming year. The anual meeting of tho Duncdin Civil Service Harrier and Amateur Athletic Club was held on Thursday evening. There was a good attendance of members. In the absence of Mr J. Wilson (president), Mr H. F. Titchencr occupied the chair. The roll of honour now contains the names of 67 past and present members. Eight have already made the supremo sacrifice—Lieut. E. E. Egglcstone (ex-New Zealand champion sprinter), Lieut. A. C. .Boyos, Sergeant F. Glastonbury, Corporal Si. C" Brown. Privato A. French (who won tho Port Chalmers to Dunedin road race in 1905, when tho Civil Service Harriers won all the five prizes), Privates "W. H. 'Lindop, A. A. Falconer, and It. V. Parker. Under tho present trying conditions the finances of the club are in a satisfactory position. The election of officers resulted as follows:— 'President, Mr J. "Wilson (re-elected); vicepresidents—Messrs S. F. Whitcombe, C. R. Andrews, J. G. Stephens, and G. Turner; captain, Mr 11. Mong; deputy-captain, Mr J. Welsh ; handieapper and starter, Mr H. F. Titchener; timekeepers—Messrs F. J. Johnson, G. Jackson, and J. Lindsay: hon. secretary, Mr J. Hoy; hon. treasurer, Mr A. Melville; auditors—Messrs A. P. J. Campboll and F. J. Johnson; delegates to tho Otago Centre—Messrs A. Melville and J. Hoy; committee—Messrs IT. Bond, W. Devlin, W. Halsey, G. C. Wollman, and L. Turner (with power to add to their number). Tho opening run of tho club will be held from the St. Clair Baths on Saturday.
