SENSATIONAL INCIDENT
SHOTS FIRED AT A PRISONER, (Psx Uhhteo JpRKRa AsrociattoiO HAMILTON, April 16. A sensational shooting affair is reported from To. Awamutu. It appears that about 7 o'clock last night a man was s«en prowling around the Waikaria Prison by a Native prisoner. Tho latter approached tho man, who threatened him with two revolvers if he approached any nearer. He informed the Native that he was not after him, but was after one of the warders. Tho Native then informed the warders, after whieh he again came out in search of tho_ man, who, it is alleged, fired at him with a revolver and disappeared into the scrub and .darkness. Search was mado by the warders, but so far without success.. The police are now scouring the district for tho man, who is believed to be an cxprisoner.
The amount received by the Exchequer m payment of excess profits duty up to January 27 was £103,503,000. The estimated total for the year ending March 31 nex: was £86,000,000.
