Tho Monowaiwill leave Auckland to-day for Duncdin, via East Coast ports. *<■- Tho To Anau will sail towards the end of , tho week for Bluff, Oamaru, Napier, Gishorne, and Auckland. Mr E. A. Eva,_ manager at Suva for the Union Steam Ship Company, is at preesnt on a' visit to the South Island.

Tho Kotare was due last night with a cargo of timber_ from • Stewart Island. She is. timed to sail to-morrow morning for Bluff and Invercargill. Tho Kamo was delayed by rain at Wellington. She left yesterday for Lyttelton and Dunedin, and is due hero on Thursday. She will load general cargo at this port for Auckland.

Owing to the shortage of bunker coal, th,e Mapourika is withdrawn from tho Wel-lington-West Coast service, and is at present laid up at Wellington. Tho Corinna arrived at Dunedin on Surfday afternoon from Now Plymouth direct. She was fixed to sail on the return voyage last night, and will omit tho customary call at Wellington. Tho Government steamer Hinemoa left Wellington yesterday on her tour to the southern and western lighthouses and to tho sounds. She is duo here towards the end of the week to load tho remainder of her stores. i

Tho Kowhai arrived at Greymouth at 2 a.m. on Sunday from New Plymouth. Sho is fixed to sail to-morrow with a cargo of timber for Lyttelton and Dunedin, and is due at this port about the end! of tho week. Captain Hv White-Parsona, of the Napier Harbour Board,' is, according to a Hawke'a Bay exchange, at present on his way to Now Zealand. Ho has been away on active service with one of his Majesty's ships for nearly two years. The Northern Steamship Company bas increased the rates for passage fares and . freights as from April 2. The only one exception is on freight to Te Aroha, which remains tho _ same. The reason given for the increase is the heavy additional expenditure for wages, coals, and stores. The following passengers were brought to Dunedin yesterday: — Misses Gardiner, Orombie, L. Foster, Mesdames J. Ross . and' family, J. Prideaux, Matheson, Harvey .and two children, T. Clark, L. Sayers, Nugent, and Messrs O. Sharpo, Hookey, A. ~:J. Rigg, A. M. Beer, and F. Makin. -.., r. It seems ae if there, might bo some good .salvage for underwriters from the wreck of the steamer Bear, which lies near Cape ", , Mend&cino (says Fairpl/iy). The after-part has been badly damaged, but from forward toaffc of the engine room the vessel seems fairly eound, and an attempt to float this portion is to be made. In addition to this, . some valuable fittings have already been recovered, and success to the further operations will mean a handsome recovery on the vessel's insured value of £100,000. (5 Seamen are _ characteristically charitable, and further evidence of this is forthcoming

in their recent response to two urgent appeals. Tho Federated Seamen's Union of , t New Zealand issued a subscription list ' among the members on behalf of an aged member at Wellington, who has fallen on evil days. There was a generous response, no lesa than £102 being collected. Another ; list -was circulated in aid of tho wifo and two children of another member who has been admitted to a mental hospital,' and up to date £60 has been subscribed. In . both cases tho amounts havo been paid over.

.., The. New Zealand Refrigerating "Company has decided to convert its weß-known schooner Morning Light into a lighter, which will bo used at Wanganui in connection with tho new works. Sho is at present in tho shipwright's hands at Lyttelton, and has boon insulated'. It is proposed to fit her Tip with a new 100 h.p. auxiliary engine. Tho Morning Light will shortly bo S laced on tho slip for cleaning arid overall, and "will bo ready to tako up her new work in about two months. It is reported that the United States navy battle cruisers, which aro to be laid down next year, will havo six funnels—at any rate, that is ; the arrangement now shown on the plan's prepared. It is also . reported that thoy will 'bo electrically driven —that is to say, thcro will bo steam turbines installed driving dynamos which will supply electric power to tho motors driving tho propellers, on tho sarao arrangement as that adopts with tho United States battleship California. A speed, of 35 knota is: required, and 180,000 h.p. to 200,000 Ln. will be necessary for this speed. With a view to facilitating tho tendering of the steamer Arahura it has been decided to tako advantago oE the vessel being laid up for repairs and overhaul to remove the bolting which extends in sections round tho ship's sides. Tho belting was originally intended for protective purposes, during berthing operations when tho vessel was originally engaged on tho West Coast trade, but since tho vessel has been engaged in tho Gisborao run ichas proved a source of much difficulty in lightering and tender 1 operations, particularly in rough weather. With the belting removed, the tenders will bo able to lio alongside with much greater ease, as thero will not bo tho danger of bulwarks being caught in the belting in the movomont alongside. On Thursday afternoon workmen were engaged' riveting the fifth plate into position, the top of tho plate being a littlo above the top of tho main deck. Tho removal of tho bolting was in progress, and in response to an inquiry at tho company's office it was stated that, the 'repairs wero then expected: to bo completed in a fortnight. Tho work on tho bows of tho Homo steamer is also well advanced, but, in addition to the heavy bow plate, thero are still a number of stem plates to placo in position.
