The story gets its nam© from aji immensely valuable string of pearls, which are the ocaitro of interest .throughout. They belong to Lorillard, a wealthy and 1 unscrupulous Wall street broker, and' he lends thorn for a special ocoasion to Diane Winston, Itho beatrtifnl daughter of a olerk of his. Her father returns the pearls to Lorrillard after tho function is over, but h© dies suddenly before he caj» toll her they have been returned. Lorillard seizes tho opportunity to m&ko Diano bclicvo tho pearls axo lost, and sho agrees to work for him to pay for tho ySJ 3 - Diano and Lorillard's secretary (Clarke) are in love, but Lorillard, who •vvunts Diane for himself, dismisses' iiim and tries to thwart liim in every way. The climax comes when Diano finds the missing pearls m Lorillard's safe, takes and pawns them, and operates with the money on tho stock exchange in such a way as to make a fortune for Clarko ajid ruin Lorillard.
