WELLINGTON, April 13. lnere was some alarm amongst exporters of butter and cheeso recently because it was feared that tho levy mado on butterfae under tho butter-price adjustment scheme would not prove to be sufficient owing to the increasing price of butter in tho English market. Tho matter lias been examined by tho Board of Trade, and after a very full investigation the board is satisfied that the fund established under the scheme is solvent, and that 110 addition to tho levy "will be found necessary. Some timo ago the Board of Trade was appointed a commission to inquire as to tho expediency or otherwise of prohibiting the export of whito piiio timber. This is tho only timber in uso in New Zealand for the making- of butter boxes, and, as supplies are getting short, tho suggestion is mado on behalf of farmers and exporters of i t - t l r t , hat t1 ? 0 fix Port o f this timber, for which thero is a strong demand in Australia, should be prohibited or restricted. The only counter suggestion mado is that the Government ought to experiment with other timbers. Tho Board of Trade was directed to inquire into these questions, and actually opened tho investigation in tho Auckland district some time ago. The inquiry had to bo dropped becauso tho board had other urgent business to deal with, but it will be resumed on the West Coast early in next month.
