MINING.
During tho four-weekly period ended March 10, tho Waihi Gold Mining Company crushed and treated 13,353 tons of ore for a return of bullion valued at £24,137. Compared with tlic return for the correspcndir" period of last year, when 15,993 tons' \ ■VJdt-d £26.147, this shows a decrease of £2010 The official report states that tho decreased output was due t-o stoppages at the mill. r lhe total value of tho bullion won from the mine to date is £11,496,683. The following is a copy of a cablegram forwarded to tho head offico in London by the mine superintendent : —No. 12 level: At 653 ft in tho west crosscut from No. 4 shaft north-west crosscut quartz was intersected. The average value of the first I2ft, is 6s 9d a ton. The drive on to tho Dreadnought lode east has been extended 22ft. namely, from 195 ft to 217 ft east of No. 4 shaft north-west crosscut, and is worth £1 15s 3d a ton.
Tho following cablegram has been sent to the head oflico of tho Waihi Grand Junotion Company, London, dated March 21, 1917:—"We are crushing 380 tons per 24 hours: tho extraction is £1 13s. No. 8 level (lode cut at 116 ft in south-oast crosscut) : Tho east drivo was advanced to 214 ft. the average value for a width of 4ft 9iri is 18s per ton. wiih no walls exposed. West
drive: At 30ft in this drive we havo driven to tho north-west 141 ft from tho south-oast crosscut. Tho average value for a width of 61m is 4s sd, with tho north wall exposed. At 140 ft wo have driven a crosscut to tho south for a distance of 26ft through country rook. Empire footwall branch lode (cut at 147ifc in tho south-east crosscut): West drivo advanced to 126 ft, the average value for a width of 50in is 4s. The lode has been broken out from 60ft to 105 ft for tho full width. It is 189 in, and contains country rock. The average assay value I? £1 15s. East drive advanced to 141 ft average value for a width of 57in, which contains country rock, is 7s 4d. Breaking out from 60ft to 80ft, tho lode is 28in wide, and assays £2 15s lOd. Tho main south-oast crosscut has been advanced to 261 ft from No. 1 shaft."
