PRICE OF FOODSTUFFS IN LONDON.
Mr Ales. B. Mercer, of Canongate street, has brought under our notice a communication from a friend at Home, in which some interesting facts arc; given concerning the price of foodstuffs in London. Tho writer says "The cost of living is reaching a high figure. Wages havo gone up, but, little as compared with tho rise in foodstuffs. Cheese is Is 4d per lb, moat and bacon Is 4d per lb, 41b loaf lOd. Sugar can be got only in small quantities, at 6£d per lb, and you must buy tea or cofTec with it. "We think ourselves lucky to get Jib of sugar at a timo. Eggs arc 4d each, butter 2s 6d per lb, potatoes 2d per lb, cabbages, turnips, onions, etc., 3d per lb, and oven red herrings aro a luxury at each."
