Miss A. M. M'lntosh has been transferred from ICapuai to tho District High School, Akaroa, as assistant mistress.

Mr W. D. Hunt, Otago and Southland member of the National Efficiency Hoard, will return to Dunedin to-night from Wellington, where ho ha.s been attending a full meeting of tho board. ~ I'ho following appointments have boon made in connection with tho High Schools hero. At tho Boys' High School Mrs 0. V. Longton, MA., of Christchurch, and Miss K E. M. Whitehead, M.A., of Dunedin, and Mr W. E. Holmes have been appointed to temporary posts upon-the staff as from the beginning of tho second term. In connection with the Girls' High School, Miss Edith M. Bruce, M.A., and Miss S. M. R. Roach, M.A., havo been added to the staff.

On Friday evening tho members of St. Church, Roxburgh, entertained the Rev. Father Kaveney at a farewell social. Mr J. H. Waigth occupied tho chair After a pleasant hour had been spent on progressive euchro, the chairman referred to the many good qualities of Father Kaveney, and expressed tho regret of the congregation at his departure. Ho also took "the opportunity of welcoming tho Rev. Father Corcoran to the parish, and wished both of them every success. Tho presentation, which consisted of a cheque, waa made by Mr J. _H. Waigth, jun. Short speeches eulogistic of Father Kaveney were made by Messrs M'Mullin, Woodhouse, Laloli, Brady, Butler, and Father Corcoran, tho latter thanking the people for their cordial "welcome. Father Kaveney, in replying, thanked tho people foi- their present and for tho many kindnesses they had rendered him. After supper a short musical programme was provided, and a very pleasant evening -was closed with " Auld Lang Syne." Another old pioneer, Mr Charles Clarke, passed away on March 23, at the residence of his brofcher-in law, Mr Thomas Gawn, Balclutha (says tho Clutha Leader). Tho deceased gentleman was. born at Gortnagross, County Tyrone, Ireland, and in 1862 went to Melbourne in the Donald M'Kay. A few days later ho sailed for Now Zealand to join his brother Robert. The late Mr Clarko worked at tho gold diggings for a. time, but later he went to Dunedin, where he wns warder in tho gaol for two years. He then removed to the West Coast, and began storokeoping. Subsequently he returned to Dunedin, bought a team, and was for a number of years engaged in carrying provisions to tho diggings. While at this occupation he had some exciting experiences. After leaving tho carrying trade, Mr Clarke shipped his teams to "Melbourneand sold them. Encouraged by his success in his initial venturo in trading in horses, ho continued at this for a time. About this dato he took to racing as a hobby. The lato Mr Clarko next bought Lakefield Farm, Taieri, where ho resided for 26 years. Selling out, ho again took to buying horses and shipped them to Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane. Afterwards ho settled" for a few years at Janefiold. but his health failing him, ho went to Balclutha to reside with his sister.
