In the fighting round Thiepval an officer with a few men got into the German third line trench and was cut off. The subaltern at once organised his men into n bombing party, and they went along the trench bombing the Germans out. At 10 o'clock in the morning the subaltern was wounded in the leg by a bomb. He was bandaged by his men, and the party carried on until they fell in with an officer and three men from another battalion. The party, numbering by now 11, worked up and down the German trenches the whole of the day. AH the time the Germans wero trying to bomb them out into (he open. The little band finished their own stock of bombs soon after midday, but they got hold of rifles, some British and some German, and still held out. As tho evening drew on they were still going strong until the officer was wounded again, this time in the head. A little later the officer who had joined the party had his hand almost torn away, and a few minutes afterwards was shot through tho head. At 6 o'clock the officer, who had already been wounded twice, was shot through the chest, but even then the little part y" bravely held on. The men, numbering now only five, did all that they could for their officer. They dressed his wounds under a heavy fire, and, after a short rest, tho party moved on down the trench. Later, under cover of darkness, they managed to get into touch with a battalion on their left, who gave them a great reception.

— New York State is now enlarging the once busy and profitable Eric Canal at an estimated cost of not Irse than 100,000,000d01. in order that it may carry barges of 1000 tons capacity from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lairs, and vice versa. The plan is to charge nothing for the use of the canal. This will mean a burden on the taxpayers of the State; — an uncompensated loss to the taxpayers in those parts of the State which cannot economically use the canal cither to market their produce or to obtain goods for consumption. It amounts to a pift by the taxpayers of the State of New York to those producers and consumers in other States who can sell their poods for more or buy desired goods for less because of tho free use of the Erie Canal. It involves encouragement (o transportation via the canal of goods which nr.iirht better go by railway or by the tit. Lawrence River. WOLFE'S SCHNAPPS is suitable alike for men and women, and is in every senso beneficial.
