ATTEMPT TO FORCE OTRANTO STRAIT.
AUSTRIAN WARSHIPS BEATEN OFF.

A Rome naval communique states that several enemy ships on the night of the 23rd inst. attacked small guardships in the Otranto Canal. French destroyers espied them, and a" sharp engagement ensued. The enemy fled, pursued by the Allies' forces, and escaped in the darkness. The enemy loss is not known. A French destroyer and one guardship were slightly damaged.

(Received Dec. 27, at 7.30 p.m.) Another version of the Otranto fight states that an Austrian squadron endeavoured to force the strait, bub French destroyers came to the rescue of the patrols. Subsequently the Italian and allied naval units partook in a violent duel. The enemy escaped in the darkness.
