(Received Aug. 24, at 8.40 p.m.) In the House of Commons, Lord Robert Cecil, in stating that no peace overtures had been received, said there was only one way of making overtures, namely, by communication from the enemy Government to the British Government. If such occurred, the first thing that would be done would be to consult the Allies. Asked whether any indirect o\er» turcs had been made, Lord Robert Cecil replied: "At no time," adding: "It is inadvisable to go further into that question now/'

(Received Aug 24, at 8.40 p.m.) The Amsterdam correspondent of the Daily Chronicle v rites: " For a week Hamburg has been in a state of semi revolution, the exasperated population breaking out into hunger riots and peace demonstrations. The police were unable, perhaps unwilling, to quell the disturbances. Before the soldiers ar> rived angry crowds forced their way into several of the principal streets, smashing windows. Vigorous military measures restored order."
