PENALTY FOR DESERTION.
SENTENCE OF A COURT-MARTIAL. An impressive ceremony was conducted at the conclusion of Colonel Gibbon's address to the ]6tli Reinforcements at Trentham Oamp on Monday afternoon, when a court-martial sentence was promulgated bv the Camp Adjutant, Captain Bell (says the Wellington Post). The prisoner -was a gunner in the 10th Reinforcements, who had been convicted by court-m: .rtial of escaping from confinement at Trent ham in, December, and of deserting from ilia Majesty's Forcrs, ho having been found in civilian at,tiro and engaged in civilian employment at Kapiti Island during tho present month, lie was escorted by two military police into the centre of tho hollow-square formed by the 16th-., and when Captain 8011, mounted on hoisebaek, commenced to read tho proceedings the culprit had hie hat forcibly removed. He stood there facing the wholo diaft, while C-aptam Bell, in clear-cut tones, lead the charges and pronounced the sentence of 112 diss' detention. The nrisoner's hat wn< then replaced on his head, and ho was marchcd off the ground m custody to bervc his time.
