Tho Minister of Justico was asked in tho Houso on Monday (says tho New Zealand Times) by Xvlr A. Harris whether ho would consider the question of employing prison labour in making roads, etc., in connection with opening up land for settlement and Crown lands. Tho Hon. Dr M'Nab replied that tho questioner would need to see tho Prime Minister, who was m charge of the funds for land settlement, about tho matter. If thero was a fairly extensive amount of road work to be done, and his oolloague was prepared to pay tho prisoners good wages, ho would bo very glad to consider it, but unless the work was extensivo the cost of transferring tho prisoners would so load tho work that it would not be profitable. Ho could not say whether many prisoners wero available at tho present time, but if at any timo a suitable number offered ho would bo only too glad to consider tho matter.
