OPPOSING GENERALSHIP COMPARED.

ADVANTAGE IMMENSELY WITH ALLGES. ROLLING UP THE GERMAN LINE. GENERAL FOGK'S LATEST SUCCESS. Anstralian and A T .Z. Cable Association. LONDON, July 2!. (Received July 21, at 10.10 p.m.) The British and French nubiic are delighted with the news of General Foch's capture of five railes of the Somme front. The British advances havin.> brought their line approximately level with the French, General Foch recommenced his offensive at daybreak, with most gratifying success. Ke has broken the German line and captured five miles of trenches on both banks of the Somme. He is now threatening Combles and Alos, and re= lieving the nressure on the British angle at Lougiieval-Bclville Wood, where the British were making a grand fight, though outnumbered by four to one.

The positions which tlie AngloFrench have seized on the Somme are at least as difficult and twice as extensive as the Germans seized at Verdun. The Anglo-French accomplished in 16 days what the Germans achieved in five months, with fivefold the e\= penditure in lives. The Germans fully realise the dangers of the Anglo-French advance upon tlfe confines of the Plains of Gambles, but are endeavouring to confine the lighting to the Somme sectors, as an even greater danger is the likelihood of furihsr breaches in the German line, which is being rolled un in sections. The Allies' s'reat advantage lies in the fact that the Germans are lied up to their prsitions and forced to rely upon heavy guns, which arc excellent for offence but difficult to utilise for defence, where mobility is all important. The newspapers sJivc prominence to the excellent resulis from Australian raids, which ere on a more extensive front thai) any General Haig lias yet reported. GERMAN OFFICIAL REPORT.
