INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS

The Otago branch of tho above society held its monthly meeting on Wednesday evening at tho School of Art, when a very interesting paper on " Architectural Compet'tions" was given by Mr Mandeno. Besides giving a number of personal notes and opinions as to tho various systems in use, the lecturer outlined a brief history of competitions from tho earliest times. The competition for taking down and recrcct'ng the Vatican monolithic obelisk at Rome in the sixteenth century was described, with illustrations. In the spirited discussion that took place, stress was laid on tho enormous amount of labour and time wasted annually by the profession on competition work, and the opinion was expressed that the tendency to institute competitions for unimportant work should bo discouraged as far as possible. A hearty votg of thanks was accorded Mr Mandeno for 'his paper.
