CROSSING THE LIPA.
HEROIC RUSSIAN ENGINEERS.
AUSTRSAN .GURRENDERERS.
PETROGR,I D, July 20. (Received July 20, at 9.10 p m.)
In the fight on the Lina the Russians forced the line at three o'clock in the morning of the 16tli inst. Wading under mathine-gun and rifle fire in water and marsh above their waists and often to their armpits, the engineers laboured under heavy shell fire to construct a bridge to enable the cavalry and guns to cross in pursuit of the enemv. The Austrian end of the bridge was a horrible place, con= gested with dead, dying, and horribly wounded men. Many Austrians had apparently been wounded by their own guns in attempting to prevent the bridging of the stream. The Austrians now simply refuse to fight after their initial resistance. They prefer to surrender in blocks rather than risk being cut to pieces on their retreat.
