ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
Jessie M'Kerizie, aged 62 years, died at the Invercargill Hospital on as the result of shock and burns received through her nightdress catching fire (eays the Southland Times). The deceased was a daughter of Mr James M'Konzie, drover, West Plains. , A four-year-old son of Mr S. Purvis, blacksmith, Hillend, met with a painful 1 accident on Saturday afternoon- (says the j Balclutha Free Pre®). He was standing ! near the anvil in the_ smithy,_ when his j elder brother was striking a piece of hot , steoj, a splinter from which flew and lodged '• in "he little fellow's left e.vc-. On' Monday morning the sufferer was brought to Balclutha, where it was found that the piece of steel was lodged in the eyo-ball. Tho . doctor advised the boy's removal to Ihmedin Hospital, as there was a 'danger of tho sight being injured. A man named William - Jackson, aged 42 years, died suddenly in the Hospital yesterday afternoon while under an anasthotio for tho purpose of having an operation performed on his knee. • the object being to attend to a displaced, cartilage. After the anaesthetic had been ad ministered he collapsed, and all efforts at resuscitation failed: The coroner has been notified, and he will hold an inquest at 3 p.m. to-day. The doceased, who was single, came from Kahuikn, and was admitted to the Hospital on April 5. '
