Tuesday, Apiiil 11. (Before Mr H. Y. Widdowson, ELM.) Di-uislceniKSS.—Margaret Eva Bruce, who said she was going away to Wellington, was fined 30s, with the alternative of 48 hours' imprisonment-^ Given a ' Chance—John Smith, a Maori, appeared on remand to. answer a charge of stealing, on March 20, a bicycle, valued at £6, the property of Albert Marsh. —'Chiefdetective Bishop eaid that the only thing previously known against the accused was a theft, when he was nine years of age, for which he. was committed to Burnham. He submitted that the theft was a particularly moan one. Accused .borrowed. a. bicycle from his mate at G-lenavy for two hours, and rode it to Waimatc, where he sold it for £1 ss, and cleared out. When arrested he had no money at all in his possession. He submitted that accused should not be allowed the opportunity of paying a fine. — Smith told a story about the illness of hie mother, whom he had gone to sec, and said he had not sold the bicycle, but raised a loan upon it, which he intended to repay. Ho was looking for woi'k on a trawler at Port Chalmers when arrested. Mr Widdowson, after consideration, said he was prepared to give the man a chance. He was convicted ar.cl ordered to come up for sentence at any time within 12 months, conditional on- his good behaviour, the £1 5s to bo refunded within a week.
