DR W. H. LANG APPOINTED. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, April 6. Dr W. H. Lang, the Victorian Amateur Turf Club handicap per, has been appointed handicappor to the Victorian Racing Club at a salary of £750, in succession to Mr W. A. Menzies, who recently resigned. NEW ZEALAND TROTTING ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the Board of the New Zealand Trotting Association was held on Wednesday afternoon; present—Messrs P. Selig (president), W. J. Hopkins, W. H. Denton W. G. Gerrard, H. J. Palmer, H. W. Kitchingham, and PI. F. Nicoll. The South Wairarapa Trotting Club wrote stating that it had no objection to giving its profits to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund, but it did not approve of setting them asido for the benefit of any particular class. Subject to that reservation, it had no objection l to tho funds being administered by trustees appointed by the racing and trotting authorities. A letter from the New South Wales Trotting Club, in reference to the West Australian Trotting Association's suggestion that regulations should be adopted to 'make branding, compulsory, was referred to the Special Committee appointed to report on the subject. The case of the horse George Berlin, who at the last meeting of the association had been disqualified for life on the ground that he was identical with the horse Kalgoorlie, was further considered,—Mr A. E. Hall, of Ravensbourne, who was stated to bo the breeder of George Berlin, and from whom Alexander Dawes said that he had purchased that horse, ivas in attendance. In the course of his evidence, Mr Hall said' ; that he bred George Berlin, the horse that I raced at Waikouait.i. He could not say whether those men who examined the horse at Grant's stables, which they said was Kalgoorlie, saw the horse he had bred. He was not at the stables at .the time. His son bought tho dam of George Berlin in foal, but he could not say from whom ho bought her. His son was now in America, but ho,j (witness) understood from him that the mare was in foal to George M. Patchen. Mr Dawes had made inquiries from the owner of George M, /Patchen to verify the breeding, but had boon informed that he had no records so far back. Witness had never raced a horse in his life, but when he heard from Mr Dawes that there was some trouble about George Berlin ho agreed to take tho horse back at tho same price (£ls) as Mr Dawes had given for him. About the end of February he had sold tho horse at a better price to a youner fellow named George Robertson, who said he was going away into tho country. Witness did not know whore Robertson was now, but he thought he was in Central Otago. Witness had been told by Mr Ritchie not to part with the horse, but he |ia<] -not felt interested in the matter, and so had sold him. Robertson, who gave him £20 for the horse, knew that he had been racing. He had several inquiries for the. horse as soon as it was known that he had taken him back. In reply to questions/the witness said he had no concern with either Mr Dawes or the board, and ho considered that he was entitled to please himself in regard to selling the horse. The horse had been sold before Mr Ritchie, had told him -not to nart with him, but ho had not given Mr Ritchie information to that effect. The witness also put in several affidavits dealing with the identity of the horse. Further con aidotfiiion of the case was adjourned.

Correspondence was received .from tho Bengerburn Jockey Club in reference to the Ettrick Trot at tho club's recent meeting. A horse callcd Tho Sprinter finished first, but tho judge declined hiin a plaod on the ground that lid had walked past tho post.—lt was pointed out that the judge's duty was confined to placing tho horses in tho order in which they passed tho post, and it was decided to instruct the club that tho stakes should bo awarded to Tho Sprinter. Tho action of tho stewards of the Wanganui Trotting Club in disqualifying Rio Grande for galloping in the Ballaneo Handicap, und placing Ikddy Lind in his stead, was endorsed. Mr D. M. Cochrane, solicitor, wrote asking 'the association to consider the question of removing tho disqualification imposed on Thomas Butler in connection with tho horse Concorah.—lt was decided to communicate with tho Forbury Park Trotting Club, by whom tho disqualification had been imposed. On tho recommendation of the Foreign Horse Committeo it was decided to issue certificates for tho horses Lobster and Vera Mauritius. BEAUMONT RACES. The secretary of the Beaumont Jockey Club advises us that tho following names wero omitted from the list of nominations for tho club's races: — One-mile Trot.—Promise and Satin Rose. One Mile and a-half Trot.—Manganui and General Gorton Acceptances for tho Great Easter and Autumn Handicaps, forfeits for the Champagne and Challenge Stakes; . also generaf entries, for lii© Canterbury Jockey Club's autumn meeting will close this evening. 1 Madder, by Gossoon from Madras, has passed away at Mr J. F. Reid's Burns.'do stud (says tho Christchurch Press). Her first foal was born in 1893, and she only missed once in her long stud career, 17 foals in 18 years being a really excellent reoord. Tho old mare left a colt foal by Rokeby, and was in foal to Solferino. To Stcpniak, Madder produced in successive years Madrigal, Rose Madder, Rubia, Munjeot, Munjista, All Red, Ukraine, Cronstadt, Madhura, and Roso Red. Her last winner* is the two-year-old filly Rose Pink, by Kilbroney, loased for her racing career to "Mr H. Whitney." Munjeet was a very brilliant mare, and among other races wofi tiho Canterbury Welcome Stafces, tho Canterbury Champagne Stakes, tho Wellesley Stakes, and tho Palmereton North Stakes. Munjistn, won the Canterbury Oaks, and is tho dam of tho New Zealand Gup deadheater Indigo. All Red was one of tho best handicap performers wo have had in. New Zealand. Ho won the Auckland Cup two yoars in succession, carrying 8.6 as a four-year-old and 9.1 as a five-year-old. Cronstadt was a really good horse, but ho vfras one dogged by ill-fortune almost throughout his career, and "he won only a small number of the races which ho would have won but for interruption in his training by rather frequent accidcnts. Ukraine made tho highest price of the sales as a yearling, and as the dam of that smart colt Sasanof aho has a reputation already. All Madder's daughters aro proving themselves at the stud, and tho blood should not bo allowed .to die out. Mr " Highdcn" has had tho bad luok to lose tho services of the imported horse Panmure. Ho broke down badly after a" gallop at Awapurii one morning last week, and it is y fegred that he may never raoo again. On the form he has shown" sinco he has been in New Zealand Panmure promised to develop into a first-clasa racelhorso, and many sportsmen were looking forward to seeing.him compete against the best in the dominion in the Awapuni Gold Cup next week.
