In the first grade matches at Christchurch last Saturday Riccarton 269 (H; B. Whitta 131 not out, E. T. Taylor 32, E. R. ■ Cay gill 21) defeated Sydenham 187 and 44 for five wickets. Linwood 178 and 141 for six wickets (R. Read 72, G. Tate 28) defeated West Christchurch 97 (H. B. Lusk 43) and 120 for two wickets (D. Reese not out 58, P. S. Foster not out 38). East Christohurch 179 (E. Brosnahan 57, J„ H. Criohton' 42, E. Willsteed 34) obtained a win on the first innings over St. Albans 124 and 275 (J. 8. Barrett 53, Lawrence 48, L. Gordon 47, T. Reese 37, L. Johns 26). Linwood and Riccarton will play off for the championship. _ " Two runs short," both at on© end, were signalled at Carisbrook on Saturday last in a hit for ; three. Three of the matches that were, concluded at Wellington on Saturday last provided uneven scoring. Trentham closing their first innings with nine wickets down for 206. disposed of the University for 39 and 93 (Smith 42); Petone. having scored 164 against WeUington North's 37, dismissed their! opponents in the second innings for 107. Old Boys, who had scored 148 against Hutt's 104 in the first innings, "declared" in their second innings with six out for 188 (Lambert 59, Morris' not out 36, Christie 35. Stace 34), and then disposed of Hutt for 107 (A. Aldersley 25, Hughes 24). There was a close match between Wellington Central and Wellington East, the former winning on the first. innings by 243 to 217 (M'Girr 83, Hutchings 33, Gibbes 26).
