—It was in ISO2 that "Just So Stories" were published, primarily for the amusement of a six-year-old boy, tho author's son. The book probably has made more friends for Mr Rudyard Kipling than the volumes that deal with broader, national themes. Those friends from the shores of the Seven Soas will join in regret that John Kipling, still but a bov, is reported "missing, believed killed." He was delicate, almost a weakling, but Lord Roberts, recognising his desire to serve in arms and to avert "The Dav," nominated him for the Irish Guards. Ho" was an only son, and many will unite in sympathy with Mr and Mrs Kipling, while honouring the heroism of one who easily could have sheltered himself from danger', but insisted on doing his part. From one who, like Mr Rudyard Kipling, has forewarned the_ people for years, only to meet rebuffs, it is tragic that the supreme sacrifice should be demanded by a Fate that spares those who havo laughed at the German menace, and waxed fa*.
