SWIMMING DISPLAY
FINE ACQUATIC PERFORMANCE BY SCHOOL PUPILS.
The display of swimming and _ diving which was given in the public swimming baths in Moray place on Saturday night was witnessed with pleasure by a large attendance. It was very pleasing to see the way in which tho young people, girls as well as boys, were able to swim after, in most cases, only a year's tuition. Tho majority of the performers wero from the public schools of city and suburbs. The institution bf the baths will have been more than justified in future years show similar results, and it is probable that as time goes on the baths, under tho capable management of Mr Olds, with Mrs Olds assisting in the girls' department, will be even more extensively patronised by school childron and others than thoy are now. A performance like this serves to show to parents what a greqt benefit may be conferred upon children who partake in the healthy, stimulating exercise of swimming. The ypung people wero quite at home in the water, and their diving, swinging on rings, and other feats were carried out with confidence and ease. Some of tho girls are expert divers. Three of them gave a neat back dive, which was repeated by request. Mr Olds was watched with interest_ in his exhibition of fancy swimming, high diving, and the like. The judges were Messrs M. W. Johnson, J. W. Patton, and T. Scurr, and Mr P. Footo lent valuable assistance in arranging the various results. Cr Sinclair, chairman of the General Committee of the City Council, under the control of which the baths especially came, made a few remarks, stating that, although a number of people were up against the baths, they would if present that evening see the good work the bath was doing. He drew attention to the appearance of the water, reminding those present that the water, although discoloured, was clean. It was taken from the town supply, and if it "was good enough to drink it was good enough to swim in. He promised that within a few months the water would be filtered—(Cheers.) In concluding, Cr Sinclair spoke in high praise of both Mr and Mrs Olds in their work of teaching the young people to swim. The following are the results Boys'- 1 Diving—Ashton 1, Wilson 2.
