PRELIMINARY TRAINING FOR RECRUITS.

The class for giving a little training to men going to Trentham is being continued without break. One squad went to Trent-'" ham on Thursday last, and the training they received here will stand them in good stead, as also will tho information regarding camp life which has been imparted to them by their instructors. The class grows stronger every parade as men are Dassed, and all of them take the greatest keenness in their work, which augurs well for their life in camp. RECRUITING IN OTAGO. With tho knowlcdgo that recruiting in Otago is not as good as it should be —this is borne out by the shortage of somewhere about 40 men in our last quota,—the Recruiting Committee is endeavouring to organise a strong campaign with the assistance of good men from a distance. To that end) the chairman has been in communication with Mr L. 51. Isitt, M.P., and Mr Alpers, of Ghristchurch, and has received a telegram stating that both will arrive on December 8, speaking that night and carrying out a vigorous campaign up till the evo of the 15th, when they will return to Christchurch. Both have been doing splendid work at recruiting meetings in Canterbury, always commanding very large audiences. Mr isitt has often been heard in Dunedin, and is known to be a splendid fighting speaker, and always attractive on the platform. Up north Mr Alpers is known as one of the strongest speakers, who can hold or sway an audience at\ will. Thev will 'be a very valuable acquisition to this d.strict for recruiting purposes, and full use of their services will be made during tho week thoy will be at our disposal. Mr D. M'Laren, of Wellington, is also going to assist, probably next week. He is the active representative of tho Patriotic Association having its headquarters in Wellington, and is being sent to various parts of New Zealand for recruiting purposes. He has alrp.adv snoken at short notice at one of our Dunedin meetings, and proved himself an attracive and forcible speaker with an immense fund of Scottish humour to help him, which will always enable him to succeed in putting his audience at ease with him. Cabinet Ministers- will also deliver speeches, and every effort will be made during; the nest few weeks to procure a large increase in the number of _ men going to the front from Otago. With the definite announcements from responsible members of the Government regarding voluntary service as against conscription, and with the assurance that there is no chance of the latter except as a last resource, no man will bo justified in waiting for compulsion before going to help the Empire. A private oable message received from Alexandria states (says the Press) that Nurse Cameron, of Christehurch, one of the 6ur- x vivots of thc_ Marquette disaster, is doing well in hospital. Last week sho was reported to bo doogeropily^flk
