MINING.
The bottom of the shaft in the Waihi Extended mine, Waihi, has been cleaned out, and a wall is being put across above the solid penthouse to allow of a portion being used as a bailing' sump. The manager reports that the winze has been sunk a further 6ft, and is now being opened out into the shaft. The manager of the Occidental Consolidated mine, Thames, reports that little work was done in the stopes for the week ended November 13. Some stone, showing good dabs of gold, was picked out of the ore broken, however. In the south drive, No. 5 level, a cross leader has been met with. It dips in the same way as the flinty, which was intersected in the shaft below the level. It is probably the same, but is carrying quartz where it junctions with the reef. A few colours of gold could be seen in a good class of country. The shaft is now down 129 ft. The country in the bottom shows a little improvement. DREDGING RETURNS. Oz. dwt. gr.
