NORTH OTAGO A. AND P. ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL SHOW.

(Fboh Odb Special Rcpobtxb.) OAMARU, November 18. The fifty-third show of the 1 North. Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association was opened to-day in fine weather and under favourable auspice*. There was a reasonable attendance for the first day. The entries show a slight increase over those for last year, totalling 770, ae against 763. Not only has the war exerted some injurious influence on the show, but the season has undoubtedly been a bad one for stock, and it is surprising that a number of the entries in the stock classes came forward so well. There were no entries in merinos. The position is a little different from a few years ago, when such breeders as the Hon. R. Campbell (Otekaike), Messrs W. Gardiner, sen. (Tapui), S. Rutherford (Maheno) were exhibitors. There have been no entries in the merino class since the Jubilee Show in 1911, when Messrs T. S. Little (Ngapara) and F. H. Smith (Albury) exhibited. In the Border Leicester class the character and quality of the sheep were first class, as might have been expected, considering that sheep belonging to Mr T. S. Little and Mr J. Dowthwaite, successful exhibitors at the leading shows, were forward. Mr Little, who secured the leading ■wins at Ohristdrurch last week, showed practically the same entries. Last year there were 16 entries in tne English Leicester class, mad© by Mr J. G. A. Ruddenklau. This year Mr Ruddenklan's place was taken by Mr Cameron, of Tinaru, who showed a good okas of sheep, which have already been exhibited at the Timaru and Christchurch Shows. In the Lincoln ekes, the redoubtable New Zealand and Australian Land Company, which has now the only block of any importance in Otago where Lincolns are bred, was the sole exhibitor, and every animal shown was of good stamp and true to type. Southdowns were made more interesting by the fact that importations from the King's Sandrhjgham flock were on view, including a, ram which had been shown at the Royal Show. It was placed champion. The Shropshire were of good quality, but the loss of Mr B. Steth-Smith, who was one of the leading breeders in Otago, and who dispersed his flook some years ago, was eeverely felt The useful Corriedales, which combine the best qualities of " useful purpose" sheep, were represented .by a number of striking exhibits from the Land Company's Moeraki and Hakataramea estates. The' MoerakLstock won everything except the class for ram hoggets, in which Hakataramea. scored second. Last year the fat sheep entries numbered 72, but this year the number was reduced to 22, Mr W. Gardiner, jun., of Papakaio, being the leading exhibitor. Mr J. Manchester (Waimate) had five entries, and scored tne same number of seconds. The showing of shorthorn cattle was very poor. Ayrshires, as usual at Oamaru, were the strong section of the show, both the North Otago breeders —Messrs Cowan Bros, and Mr A. Gillies—being well represented. The former scoured the championship for cows with "Lena," which was champion at Oamaru in the two previous years and champion at the recent Christchurch Show.' The reserve championship was awarded to Messrs Cowan Bros.'s three-year-old heifer Uladge. In the bull class Mr Gillies secured the champion ribbon with Sir William of Inglewood, bred by Mr Rankin, of Southland. It was reserve champion at Oamaru last year. The same exhibitor obtained the reserve championship with Duke of Town-< head. The awards for two-year-old bulls in the various sections were fairly well divided between the exhibitors, but Messrs Go wan Bros, secured the majority of awards in the female classes, while Mr Gillies was most successful with bulls. A group of four was particularly striking, three lots competing, and including a large proportion .of prize takers in the various sections; ' Jerseys generally were much above the average of - exhibitions seen in the Oamaru show ring, toth in numbers and quality. The chief prize-takere were Mr T. Portis (Ardgowan), who secured both championships, and Mr J. H. Milne (Waihao Downs), whose cow in milk was reserve champion. The executors of the late Mr Peter Walker, with a solitary entry, obtained the chami pionship for bulls with a two-year-old. Holsteins, which were fairly strong at the* last show, were represented this year by a solitary animal. The general _ cattle, though few in number, were a fair lot, the most interesting feature being the contest for the best type of dairy cow, in_ which Messrs Cowan Bros.' and Mr A. Gillies's Ayrshires were placed before Mr J. H. Milne's Jerseys. Among horses, the show of thoroughbreds and carriage and trotting stallions was very small, only one being shown under each head. Hacks and hunters were more numerous than on any previous occasion, and the quality was much above the average on former occasions. Ponies were well up to the average. The draughts will not be judged till to-morrow. No pigs were shown, Mr C. Brice. the well-known breeder, not being forward Produce was largely shown. The dairy produce was about the average, «nd the cookery classes were much better than on many previous occasions. To-morrow will be people's day, aid a large attendance is expected.
