LORD HALDANE.
A REPLY TO CRITICISM. LONDON, November 18. (Received Nov. 18, at 9.55 p.m.) Lord Haldane, speaking at Hampstead, said he had been criticised for not warning tho country and his colleagues about the war. The fact was that he conveyed considerable information to his colleagues, and they immediately began activities which resulted in our command of the sea, but for which Germany would now have been at Paris and Calais. All he had done had been recorded, and he did not fear the result when his actions were revealed at the proper time. THE ANCONA. AN AUSTRIAN DENIAL. WASHINGTON, November 17. (Received Nov. 18, at 9.15 p.m.) The Austrian Government, answering the American protest, denies that any j shots were fired at the Ancona after she j came to a ston, 0 r that any shots were fired at the lifeboats containing the pas- i sengers and crew. The Ancona attempted j to escape after receiving a warning, and '■ therefore a torpedo was fired, but ample time was given the passengers to escape. The was entirely that of the crew for failing to heed the warning. j GOLD LOST IN ANCONA. (Times and Sydney Sun Services.) _• LONDON, November 17.
