LEAVING NEW ZEALAND
APPLICATIONS FOR PERMITS. THOROUGH INVESTIGATION. (From Our Own CorrebpokdsntJ WELLINGTON, November 18. From all over the country the Department of Internal Affairs is receiving applications for the permits required under the new regulation by men wishing to leave Ne\v Zealand. Altogether, about 100 application forms have been received, and about 50 permits have been .granted. Of these, many have been given to visitors, tourists, and commercial travellers who wish to return to Australia. Anions the successful applicants to-day were 17 Chinamen. Permits were also granted to other aliens, for aliens are allowed to leave provided they are not enemy aliens. No Greeks have yet applied for leave. Several apnlications have been held Tip m the meantime, and some of these will very likely bo refused; indeed, some of the applicants, who apparently found it difficult to furnish' satisfactory reasons for leaving the dominion, have not returned to the office since learning the exact conditions precedent to the issue of a permit. Apparently the regulation has not been passed any too soon. The departure of the Sydney boat has boon postponed until to-morrow, and it is now probable that all those entitled to permits who wish to oawn this steamer will get them in time. The Rivcrina will leave Auckland for Sydney on Tuesday, and in order to meet the convenience of peoplo applying at Auckland for permits to leave by this steamer an officer of the Internal Affairs Department lias been sent to Auckland. (Peb United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, November 18. "Applications aro pouring in from all over the country," said Mr Russell to-night, in reply to a question. " Some men have written" and others have telegraphed. We are trying to deal with the applications promptly m order that no man may be de» layed unnecessarily, but intending traveller* should realise the importance of jjutting in their applications in pood time. Every oasa has to be inquired into in order that the intention of the regulation may bo given effect to, and the nccc»sary investigation* take timo "
