PATRIOTIC SOCIAL AT PORT CHALMERS.

A number, of wounded soldiers just recently returned from Gallipoli, and a goodlynumber of recruits who have recently enlisted in the reinforcements from the Port district, were entertained in the Port Chalmers Town Hall last evening by the citizens. The hall was crowded, and, thanks to the talent, whose services were freely given, a most enjovablee evening was spent by thos-; .present. The musical progra/mme opened with the National Anthem, and songs were; sung by Mrs J. Morgan, Miss M. M'Donald, Mr A. Johnson. and members of the "Marama Pierrots," the. latter being responsible for several mirth-provok-ing musical sketches, solos, dialogues, etc., of more than average merit. Miss Boyne danced several Highland dances to the accompaniment of bagpipe music played by Piper Murray. At the conclusion of the concert the Mayor (Mr T. Scollav) cordially wished the recruits God-speed and a safe return to Now Zealand. He drew attention t-o the fact that a greater number of young fellows were going away to the front from the ,Port Chalmers district than had come back invalided, and he thought it must bo highly satisfying to the old identities of the district to see . the latter so well represented by their sons, in the ranks of those who were fighting for the Empire on distant shores. — (Loud applause.)

Mr J. M. Diclcson, M.P., also made a brief speech, in which he commended the fine patriotic spirit which had always animated the people 0 f the Port- Chalmers district in the past. He concluded by ■wishing' those who were leaving for Trentham the best of pood luck while on active service and a safe return to their friends and kindred.— (Loud applarse.)

Refreshments were then served by the Ladies' Committee, which is to be very ■warmly commended for its generous hospitality. and after the hall had been clcajed the social concluded with a ycry enjoyable dance, in which quite a large number took part.
