THE FIRE ON THE RACHEL COHEN.
Sie, —In your jssuo of the 9th inst. I noticed that the dockmaster (Mr Knewstubb) reported that the fire brigade did not arrive at the Rachel Cohen, which was on fire, until the fire was out, and that the watchman and the Territorial guards were returning to their quarters. Such was not the case In justice to the brigade, I wish to state that if the gates had been opened the brigade would have been in ample time to suppress the fire. As it was, two firemen jumped the fence andi got to the vessel. Mr Knewstubb further reported that the brigade did not proceed any further than the gate. I wish to state that the senior foreman and myself went to the cabin and awoke the captain, who was asleep.—l am, eto -i W. Dougherty, Captain Port Chalmers Fire Brigade. Port Chalmers, November 11.
