TREATMENT OF THE WOUNDED.
AN INTERESTING LETTER. Mr A. B. Mercer, 48 Canongate, has received the following letter, written off Alexandria, from his brother, Mr Andrew Mercer, who is on the staff of the hospital ship Glonail Oastlo: — "Wβ aro just returning from Suvla Bay with a full ship of wounded. Wo were anchored close- in to tho shore and in full view of the fighting. Tho high mountain land was occupied by tho Turke, but our navy assisted our land force, and tho noise was like thunder. It is a matter of time, for the enemy cannot long stgmd such heavy and deadly fire from tho warships. "The wounded are quickly brought on board, after receiving from tho Field Army Medical Corps. They come in bodies, and receive prompt and careful attention. Nothing too good can be said for tho medical staff and the nurses. They will run themselves off their feet, so devoted aro they tjo their duties. " After discharging, coaling, and taking in stores, we will hurry back, as there is plenty of work to do. I saw the New Zealand hospital ship Maheno at the base at Mudroe. She went with her wounded to Malta. The Australians and New Zealanders were fighting within five miles of us, and another hospital ehip wae in attendance. One ship does not heave anchor till a relief ship arrives. I was in hopes that we might take some of the wounded Home, but there is no such luck." "We aro roasting hot_ here, and Alexandria is such a dirty, sicklv place that I shall be glad to get out of it. I don't know when I shall get home. We get so many quick orders, which may come at any time. However, I am only too pleased to be able to do my bit."
