PATRIOTIC AND RECRUITING COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the above committee was held in the Town Hall yesterday afternoon; present—Messrs R. S. Black (in the chair), H. S. Fenwick, J. Ruston, R. W. Glendining, H. H. S. White, H. Reeves,-Captain Hankey, his Worship the Mayor (Mr J. J. Clark), and Meedames Macfie and Beaumont. ,

It was resolved to hold a recruiting meeting at the Town Hall steps on Saturday evening, arrangements being left in the hands of the sub-committee. It was resolved that Messrs Fenwick and Reeves be added to the sub-committee..

The Chairman reported that a very good meeting had been held at Milton, and that a committee had been formed there.

The Mayor reported that a very successful meeting had been held at Roxburgh on Saturday evening. A committee had been formed there, and they intended to make a special canvass among the eligible men in the district. A committee had also been formed at Lawrence, and it intended to work on similar lines. A very good meeting was also held at Kaitangata. The Otago General Labourers Union wrote stating that the committee'e letter asking it to appoint speakers for future meetings and also to arrange for a recruiting meeting would be placed before the executive at the next meeting on the 24th inst.

The Hon. James Allen (Minister of Defence) wrote stating that he considered Captain Hankey's generous proposal an excellent idea, and would endeavour to assist the committee as- much as possible.—Received. It was suggested that it might be advisable to have a lady speaker at one of the recruiting meetings, and was resolved to see if such a speaker could be obtained. It wae suggested that the Government should make more generallv known the amounts paid to privates and officers, and also the amount which dependents received when their relatives were killed at the front. It was thought that if this information was made more general it would considerably help recruiting.
