RAILWAY ACCIDENT

A LUCKY ESCAPE. (Peb United Pbess Association.) PAHIATUA, July 10. An accident occurred to the north-bound Wellingbnn-Wairarapa express this afternoon between the Pahiatua and Konini stations. The engino ran into a slip, left the rails, and toppled over towards the river. The carriage behind the tender ran up against a bank. But for this probably the v.;hole train would have been pulled off the line into the river. The fireman (Mr Fletcher) was extricated from under the coalbox, which was right across a rail. He had a miraculous escape. The engine-driver (Mr Flaws) and the passeifgere escaped unhurt. Several women agd children were m the derailed carriage. The line was considerably damaged, and the service was disorganised. The si in was not large, but a huge boulder weighing about half a ton was the principal obstruction.
