Watson, of Palmerston North, !who proceeded to England with Mrs Watson and family about a year ago,'has offered his services in the war, and his help has been readily-' accepted. He has enlisted for six months with tho French, Red Cross as driver of an ambulance in the Vosges. This ambulance ,is working on the firing line, taking the wounded men straight from the trenches, so -that the work is dangerous and' perilous. Ajl the men in this part of the French service are_ specially picked, and Mr .Watson's fine physique should enable him to stand the strain successfully. He will have the best wishes of his many friends in New Zealand in.his work at the front. , : GOING TO TRENTHAM j On Saturday the Otago quota of nonoornmissioned. officers for the Seventh Reinforcements- will leave Dunedin for Trentham. These comprise seven mounted trpopers and 18 infantrymen. To-day one wheeler and one farrier will proceed to Trentham to join the Army Service Corps. BELGIAN RELIEF FUND. COLLECTION' AT NORTH-EAST VALLEY./ The Belgian Relief Fund Collecting- Comof the North-East Valley will commence its collecting campaign" this week. Some two dozen ladies have divided the district between them, each being armed with, written authority to collect, signed by • tiie Mayor. Weekly or monthly subscriptions of even the smallest amounts will be regularly called for. Any person willing to and who may be overlooked in:the canvass is invited to send name and address to Mrs- Blackman, 248 Main road, North-East Valley, who is the treasurer for the local committee. ; TAD3RI BELGIAN CARNIVAL. A meeting of the executive, held last evening, was well attended, and was presided over by Mr Quelch. The Secretary reported that the goods tram would leave for south of Mosgiel at 11.50 p.m., and it was quite feasible to have a passenger car attached for the benefit of those from tho West Taiori direction. He alsb had interviewed the motor car owners, and. they were willing to run cars at a reasonable rate if desired, instead of making use, of the train. It was decided to ask all committees in charge of the various parts of the sports programme to meet the executive. In connection with the opening of the , carnival, it was decided to ask prominent laien and Dunedin public men to be present and take'part. In connection with tho. procession, it is desired that_ regalia be worn by-lodges or societies taking part. ' ' The supporters of tho various queens aro holding almost nightly socials, dances concerts, etc to raise funds with the object of placing their representative at tho head of the list. - ■ ■ ' PORT CHALMERS CANVASS; The executive of the Patriotic Committee mijt the.canvassers for Belgian relief on Monday evening in the Council Chambers. Ihe reports of. the canvassers showed that g ,° P A' W + o w had boen i onc - Although it was stated that some of the canvassers, mectin«with no response, had passed their collecting books in, those who had persevered had , experienced success to the extent that the chairman (Mr M'Lachlan) announced that the. money subscribed and promised showed a total of £40 for the fortnight. The chairman complimented the collectors on- their meritorious work, and said that more collectors would bo welcomed. It was decided to meet once a month, and the collectors were appointed as a sub-committee to collect for Belgian relief. A proposal was made to the meeting that the names of all tho donors, together with the amounts they gave, >be published in the newspapers, but after discussion the proposal was not fS h, I*s^1* 5^"80 * 0 a suggestion that * fP 0 *? °[ the work done by the Women's Patriotic Association and the Belgian Carnival Committee be submitted to the meeting, Mrs G. F. Booth, chairwoman of the I° m ?™ 6 ■■ Association, said that the sum of : £330 Is; 9d had passed through their bands; that they had in hand £40 for various purposes; 1871b of wool had been distributed for knitting of socks for onr soldiers; 24 oases of goods for Belgian relief, and Red Cross had been sent to England, and three more cases were almost readyto be despatched. The Women's Association met every Friday afternoon in the orderly room at the Garrison Hall. Increased interest was being- exhibited in the work, and there was still room for more workers. Mr M'Lachlan said the carnival produced £490, to which was added another sum makinjr the total over £500. Mr Stevenson directed attention to the Serbians' plight, and said he thought some of Hhe relief should be diverted to help them. The Chairman said that a recent enteriainment held to helo a destitute widow and orphans had resulted in tho raising of about £j* M? 1 a nd the Dramatic Club had kindly given tho entertainment.
