day £ICOC was remitted to Lord Rothschild, who is tlio treasurer of the fund that is being raised at Homo for providing ambulances. Tin- response having exceeded expectations it was decided to continue receiving subscriptions to provide a second motor ambulance. The amount cabled Home was sent in tho name of tho people of Otngo. GENERAL GODLKY'S COMMUNICATIONS. 1 .lIvIj'TEXA NT-OOLONE L M'DONALD'S ILLNESS. In a letter dalid December 17, General Godley inlorms the Hon. .( Alien, Minister of Defence, that Lieutenant-colonel M'Donald, who commanded the Otago Infantry Jiattaliori, had been admitted to the hospital suffering from internal trouble, and edit to England for an operation. NECESSITY FOR INOCULATION. Regarding inoculation, General Gcdley says he is advised by the medical ollieeib that the presence of non-inoculated men in Egypt, wnere enteric is so rife, constitutes a danger to their comrades, and he has, therefore, no hesitation, for the good of the force, iji deciding that euch men cannot remain in it. " I have had a lot of trouble over tho inoculation question, and at one time, as I wrote to you, there were 47 men, and, in addition, some on the Arawa who had not been done. I then said that I should make arrangements either to send back to New Zealand, or leave at the base, those men who still refused to bo done. This had the effect of bringing in a few more, but yesterday there were still about 50 who absolutely persisted in their refusal. In this country, where everybody gets inoculated as a matter of course, it would be very wrong to risk keeping them, bo I lmd them paraded last night' and them that, though I might respect tho conscientious objections, and did not in any way wish to threaten them, the same time my first duty was to tbo force as a whole, and I could not risk tho health of the vast majority of the men or an outbreak of enteric by keeping those who refused to submit to reasonable precautions. This had the effect of bringing in half a dozen more, but I am afraid there are still about 40 whom I am sending back by the Athenic along with a few of the worst characters. The sending back of the latter, and of those not inoeulated, will have a very good effect on the discipline and efficiency of the force, as it will make everybody realise that they must conform to necessary orders, and also that we have no use for wasters."
