Messrs Huddart, Parker, and Co. announce that a new steamer of tho Loongana class for the Melbourne - I\a«m a n i a n service should arrive in Australia in July next. Reports from the company's superintendent engineer prior to the war showed that the progress of tho work was completely satisfactory, but owing to the war a further report notified that the contractors could not guarantee delivery un to contract time, and almost immediately afterwards 150 men were commandeered for Government work. The company was for some time handicapped owing to the consulting engineer being interned at Hamburg, but after an exciting experience he escaped, and was now back at his headquarters. It was considered unlikely that the contractors would bo much over their contract time. - BATTLESHIP v . RARQUE. Tho story of how a fast German fourmasted barque endeavoured to out-distanco a British warship is told in Lake's Falmouth Packet. It says: "The capture of tho Ponapc was a moet exciting affair. Sho had oome from Iquique in 80 dav«. On Saturday a British warship saw h<rr with every stitch of canvaa set, and bowling

along at a gramd rate. Signals were hoisted on the battleehip, but Captain Hamm, of the German, did not respond, and it was evident, that lie was not going to bo captured without making a bold bid to escape. His ship was travelling faster than somo steamers, and it so nappened that the battleship, which was bent on capturing the Ponape, had been laid up in llevoiiport for somo time, and had not done much hard steaming of late. A couple of blank shots were tired with the object of inducing the Ponape to surrender, but she kept on, and at one time looked as if sho was beating the battleship in the race. However, the warship's stokers and engineering staff got to work, and it was evidemt that steam was to triumph over sail. It is stated that the captain of the man-o'-war ordered a live shell to be fired at tho German, and it was only when this order "was actually carried out and the signal was made 'Stop, or we'll sink you, that the Ponape came round and surrendered. Tho Ponape was subsequently taken into Falmouth."
