INSPECTION OF MACHINERY
CONTROL OF ENGINES. ALLEGED HARDSHIP. (Per Unite!) Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., November 27. A deputation of managers of dairy factories in the Manawatu, Hawke's Bay, Northern Wairarapa, and Rangitikei districts waited on the Hon. F. M. B. Fisher this morning in connection with a clause in the Inspection of Machinery Act which requires all engines to be in effective charge. Mr C. P.. Beattie, the spokesman, pointed out that enforcement would mean the appointment of a certificated engine-driver, at an extra cost of £3 5s to the factories.
The Minister said that when the clause was framed he never thought that dairy companies would be affected. The provision was necessary in sawmills and flaxmills. When he got back to Wellington he would set the department working to see if it could not distinguish between machinery which is dangerous to human life and harmless machinery. He would do his best to meet their complaint.
