AUCKLAND, November 27.
A dinghy containing two men capsized at Bayswater to-day. A young man named Michael Mahoney, employed by the Takapuna Tram Company, was drowned. His companion (A. Barton) very narrowly escaped a similar fate. A fire at Otabuhu at midnight destroyed a two-storey dwelling owined by Mr J. Andrews, and occupied by Mr S. Brunette (watchmaker and cycle agent) and Miss Harlis (confectioner). The Taviuni, which left on Thursday afternoon for the Cook and SocietyIslands, returned to port this evening. When she was about 15 hours out a defect occurred to the main engines, and it was decided to return for repairs. It is expected that the Taviuni will sail again on Saturday, as the defect is not serious.
The Marine Department has crdered a magisterial inquiry to be held at Napier regarding the stranding of the steamer Koutunui on the East Coast.
