CITY POLICE COURT.
Saturday, Noveiibeb 21. (Before Mr H. Y. Widdowson, S.M.) Drunkenness. —Thomas Latt'ey, who had not been before the court on a similar chargo for the pant five years, wae fined lite, in default; 24 nours' imprisonment. A first offender, who, when arrested by Constable Connor, at Waatati, was acting in a most peculiar manner, was remanded for a week io; medical treatment.
Obscene Language.— John Jackson Dalton was charged with thia offence. —Ln presenting tho case, Senior Sergeant Dart stated that a bootblack named Matthew Wood had pointed Dalton ouc to Coneablo Eckford (wno was standing near the Telegraph Office) as tho man who had stolen a coat from him (Wood) nine months previously. Tho constable brought Dalton back to face his accuser, and Wood then charged him in rather violent language of having stolen his coat Dalton, who was under the influence of liquor, answered Wood with some very bad language, and was thereupon arrested by Constable Eckford.—The Magistrate convicted the accused, and fined him 30s, or seven days' imprisonment.—Senior Sergeant Dart continued that he had inquired into the accusation of theft of the coat, and was not prepared to charge Dalton with the theft on the uncorroborated evidence of Wood. He suggested, however, that tho magistrate might take Wood's information and hear the case. —The Magistrate decided to follow this course.—Wood, who proved a rather excitable witness, then gave evidence, after which his Worship dismissed the case.
