AUCKLAND, July 8. Mr Ralph Stewart, formerly inspector of schools at Auckland, has been selected as the Liberal candidate for Taurauga.

After a lively meeting of shareholders in the Wonderland Amusement Company nv was decided to approach the City Council and seek permission to carry on an amusements park in the Exhibition Grounds during the coming summer, and thus endeavour to retrieve the loss sustained during the Exhibition period.

WELLINGTON, July 8. A largely-attended conference o£ delegates of local bodies and chambers of commerce in the Wellington district opened to-day. The objects are to discuss the Rimutaka deviation, and the best means of improving access between Wellington city and the country districts by rail and road, and opening up for closer settlement the East Coast lands. A motion was carried to the effect that the Rimutaka deviation is an absolute and urgent necessity.

CHRISTCHURCH, Jnly 8. An action against Messrs G. and W. Bowron and G. J. Smith, of Christchurch, by Messrs Alfred Booth and Co., Liverpool, to recover the sum of £14,500, with interest thereon, making a total of close on £19,000, was mentioned at a Chambers sitting of the Supreme Court this morning, when Mr Justice Sim made an order giving four months' further time to file a statement of defence. Mr Beswick appeared on behalf of the defendants, and Mr Alpers for the plaintiffs.

TIMARU, July 8. There was a large gathering to-night in Olynrpia at a conversazione in honour of the Bth Mounted Regiment, when the Stead Shield, for the best all-round regiment at Kowhai camp, was presented oy Colonel Chafiey, and ladies' prizes were presented to senior cadets for shooting.
