FATALITIES.

(Pμ Unhid Puts!- A&bociation.) AUCKLAND, July 7. A somewhat lengthy inquest was held today concerning the death of Thomas Butland, a workman, who fail over 30ft on Monday while engaged on a building in Queen street, and who died almost immediately, lhe deceased was on a heavy girder, which was being lifted into position by steam power. A link in a heavy chain suddenly broJce, and a falling block from the tackle struck the deceased on the head, and he fell on to some logs below, receiving fatal injuries. Expert evidence was given to the effect that die metal in the steel chain was rendered) brittle by frost the .previous nigiht, and ihis probably caused it to break. After a. full inquiry tho coroner found that death was accidental, no blame being attachable to anyone.

GISBORNE, July 7. Robert M'Whirter, who was injured by falling out of on upstairs bedroom window in a. country hotel, died in the liospital. The body of William Cochrane, wlio waa dirowned in .the Mofcu River a fortnight ago, was discovered at a, snot near whero the nwn's cries -were, heard on the night of the fatality. FOXTON, July 7. A sudden denth occurred hero shortly before 5 o'clock this evening. Mrs Henderson, relict of Mr William Henderson, a well-known Marten settler, was on a visit to her daughter (Mrs A. Hawke), and had just returne<l from paying an afternoon call. She complained of feeling unwell, and passed away in a 'few mimutes. Death was due to heart failure. The deceased leaves a grown-up family of two sons and four daughters.
