He was -particularly interested in young authors " The novice of to-day may l>e the popular favourite of to-morrow." Mr Jenkins said he had succeeded *in obtaining a book from Theodor Watts-Dun-ton (whose death was announced by cable last week). Asked if publishers wore -often at fault, Mr Jenkins replied:—" Why, wo live on each other's mistakes. I constantly see in other publishers' lists books that I have declined, and two novels of which I have so far sold 17,000 copies ('Bachelors' Buttons" and 'Tho Sale of Lady 1 )aventry ') were both declined before they came "to me. On tho other hand, the author of a novel that I declined recently sent me a note to sa.y that it was already in its second Edition. I wished her good jnck and Godspeed,"
