AUCKLAND, July 7. The financial position of the Exhibition Amusements, Ltd., is explained by the reports and balance sheet prepared for a general meeting of shareholders. They show that the result from the operations of "Wonderland" during the period of the Exhibition was a net loss of £3820. Among the business to come before the meeting will be the consideration of a proposal that the company should go into liquidation.
PAHIATUA, July 7. The Borough Council has decided to take a roll of the ratepayers on a proposal to raise a loan of £10,000 for an electric light and power scheme. A poll will also be taken on a proposal to build a new post office in one of the garden squares in the centre of the town. The shareholders in the Wellington Farmers' Bacon Company, at a meeting here, decided to take steps to reconstruct the company with a nominal capital of £15,000, and a representative conmuttee was appointed. An organiser is to be engaged.
WELLINGTON, July 7.
Two of the Chinese crew of the steamer Northern, while smuggling opium ashore, were caught by the Customs officials last night. To-day they were each lined £25, or two months' imprisonment. The shipping company paid the fines in preference to entering into £100 bonds and having to send the offenders out of the country at the expiration of their sentence.
INVERCARGILL, July 7. The InvercargjU Competitions Society has Again an excellent entry for the forthcoming festival. The aggregate figures are :—Music, 982; elocution, 393; literature, drawing, writing, .spelling, and sewing, 371; physical drill, dancing, and halfhour entertainments, 368; —total, 2114.
