DESTROYING BEAUTY SPOTS

PROTEST BY MA YOB OF AUCKLAND. (Fhom Oue Own Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, July 7. " It makes my blood boil in going round the suburbs to see the vandal gashes in the volcanic cones around Auckland," said the Mayor (Mr C. J. Pair), in introducing the town-planning lecturers, Messrs W. It. Davidge and C. C. Reade, to last night's audience in the Town Hall Concert Cnamber. "What a, wretched jelly-fish people we are to allow it," proceeded the Mayor, " In these volcanic hills Nature has given this isthmus a series of beauty spots. Yet what is happening! Mount Eden is being carried away tor road metal. Mount Smart has disappeared, except for a small portion on the eastern side. Mount Albert is being carted away by the Government for railway ballast. At the Three Kings ono cone has gone, and a second is going. Mount Hobson and Mount Wellington are the samo. Not one of these hills ie free from the hands of men who seek to make a few pounds' profit out of Nature's grandest handiwork in Auckland. Your children will curse you, , ' Mr Parr added, " if you allow these beauties of Nature to be vilely desecrated any longer?'—(Applause.) He hoped one result of the townplanning lectures would be the formation of an association in Auckland whose objects would be not only the watching of the city's development but also the preservation of its beauty tpots from destruction.
