WELLINGTON NOTES.

(Fsou Ora Own Cobbespompikt.) WELLINGTON, May 11. Beceritly, on the Hutt road, a young man who was riding a motor cycle ran into the shaft of a cart that was being driven without any light about ft. The shaft penetrated the man's chest, and he died in a few minutes. The grand jury to-day returned a true bill against the driver of the cart (Thomas Sheehan), who was charged with manslaughter. Sheehan,, however, failed to appear at' the Supreme Court when called upon, and the Crown Prosecutor eaid it was understood that he had bolted. There is so much traffic on the Hutt road now that it is _ positively dangerous for vehicles to be driven without lights. There have been several accidents and many narrow escapes; indeed, it is a question whether on such Toads horse vehicles as well as motor cars should not be compelled to carry a tail light. In any case the by-law regarding the carrying of lights seems to be enforced in a rather lax manner. Two thousand three hundred t and twentyfive shares in the Karamea Steamship Company (fully paid up to £1 each) sold at auction here realised £490, the purchaser being Mr W. S. Bennett, as agent. The sale, was by order of the mortgagee. Opossum's are plentiful in the Turaldna Valley, and are becoming a' nuisance in the orchards. In the camps also they give trouble, all food having to be secured from them when the occupants are away.
