NOTES BY SENTINEL,

First Glance is unlikely te> race again until next season. .

L. H. Hewitt has been receiving a few mounts during the early part of the present season in England. The silver cup which goes as a trophy with the Hawke's Bay Cup, was presented to W. Bell, who rode Kooya, winnor of the racc.

Mr R. 0. Duncan, the stipendiary steward in attendance at Asihburton last week, asked for an explanation of Gapon's running in the principal event at tho meeting. Messrs Riddiford keep on adding to tho strength of their team in J. Lowe's stable, and recently purchased a yearling sister to Valhalla. F. E. Jones, who was for 60veral seasons first horseman to tho Chokebore stable, will again don Sir George Clifford's bluo and gold jacket next season. Since its summer meeting tho Gore Racing Cl'ub has imx>roved its track, and now intends enlarging the. totalisator house in order to instal a new and up-to-date totalisator. The running of Merry 1100 and Postilion at the Ilawke's Bay meeting was subjected to official inquiry by tho stewards, who accepted the explanation of tho owners concerned. For many years the Gore Racing Club has held ite summer meeting in January, but will probably transfer it to March next season. If this change is mode the Gore, Invercargill, and Riverton meetings would bo got off during three consecutive weeks. "Sir Bcdevore " reports that Mr "Highden " recently received an offer of 2000 guineas for the Persimmon mare Perolina. The offer came from England, where Persimmon mares are growing in favour with brcedors. Perolina cost her present owner 675 guineas at the disposal sale of the late Mr G. G. iStcad's stud. She was got by Persimmon from La Carolina, by Sterling from Oherrv Duchess. Perolina raoed 17 times without success as a five-year-old, which was her first and only season on the turf. BASKET BALL. Quite 'an unusually large number of spectators congregated at tho north end of the Oval on Saturday afternoon to witness the opening, of tho Young Women's Christian Association Basket Ball Club. The game, which has long been popular amongst the Biblo class girls, and which lately has been taken up by some of the leading schools, has been chosen by the association for the winter pastime in preference to the somewhat more strenuous game of hockey, as the leaders considered it a better game for girls of'average strensth who have not much opportunity of exercising during the week. On the advice of Mr Lloyd Phillips, physical director of tho Y.M.C.A., the game is being played with the introduction of backboards. The advantage of these was clearly demonstrated cm Saturday's play, for the ball, striking these boards, is thrown back into tho field, and keeps the game livelier. Two full teams—the" Reds and the Whites—played the initial game, which resulted in a victory for the Whites by 5 goals to 4. Mr Phillips acted as instructor and referee. At the conclusion of the game Miss Thurston was elected captain of the Reds, and Miss D. Beaton proposed as captain for the Whites, and Miss Edmond elected secretary and treasurer for the club. A third team has nearly its full complement of members. ST. CLAIR LADIES' GOLF CLUB. The first qualifying round of the championship, and also the competitibn for Mrs K. S. Ramsay's trophy, will be played today. The following is tho draw:—Mrs Sargood v. Miss B. Glendining, Mrs Gilray v. Mre Young, Mrs M'Carthy v. Mrs Ma/ckie, Miss N. Glendining v. Miss M. Law, Mrs Smith v. Miss Fynmore, Miss Burt v. Mrs Isaacs, Mrs Milne v. Miss M'Hutcheon, Mrs ;Dick v. Miss Wilson, Mrs Kahlenberg v. Miss Nixon, Mre Theomin v..
