FIRES.
(Peb United Pkebs Association.) AUCKLAND, May 9. Charles B. Short's joinery factory in Remuera, together with its machinery and other contents, was. totally destroyed by fire last night. May 1Q A fire, tne origin of which is a mystery, occurred on tne North Auckland lino yesterday, between Kawakawa and Opau. Flames were discovered in a guard's van on a train. aft it ran down to the Opau •wharf, and patent fire extinguishers were tried without avail. Gn the arrival of the train at the station the outbreak was subdued by a buckot brigade, although by ' then the contents of the van _ had been badly damaged, with the exception of the mails, which were rescued intact. -Amongst the goods destroyed was a full programme of moving picture films, valued at £400, owned by Hayward's (Ltd.) NAPIER, May 10. The well-known dredge 0.D.K., which was responsible for the reclamation of the whole of Napier South, having been engaged in the work for the past 14 years was destroyed by fire on Saturday afternoon at a spot near tho Hastings 6treot 6oufch extension. The dredgemaster states that all Lands left the dredge at 11.15 a.m., and about' an hour later he received a communication that she was on fire. A bucket brigade got to work, but without avail. When tho dredge was left the dredgemaeter states that the fires were banked 1 , and tho cause of tho outbreak was a mystery to him. The engine boiler has not been damaged, and it is thought that most of the machinery will bo usable in the construction of a new dredge. Tho C.D.K. was 1 recently taken over by the Napier Harbour Board from, the syndicate which carried out the reclamation of Napier South, the price being £15(X).
